One of the unique challenges of building this lovely family retreat was the existing building code that prevented the house from being any taller than six feet above grade on the building’s uphill side.
It is not very often that the same architect is brought in to revamp and renovate a home even though it has been more than 2 decades since the first redesign. But of W3 Architects found himself in this unique spot as he was asked to expand and revitalize a Santa Monica home from the 1950s that he first upgraded in 1989 himself.
Designed by Gabriela Caicedo-Liebert the house combines a hint of Art Deco with unassuming minimalism and contemporary ergonomics to fashion a distinct and dashing silhouette. The two main structures of the house that welcome you are both windowless and have a gentle curved edge with the main entrance located in between the twin behemoths.
Operable sliding panels bring in another layer of flexibility and adaptability to a beautiful and sensible makeover that draws you in with its distinct industrial-modern flavor and smart utilization of space.
With a simple white backdrop the living room offers a perfect canvas to bring in essentially different materials and textures like the snazzy Moroccan rug (which is still pretty modern) a stone coffee table and the minimal modern fireplace.
The is filled with ample textural beauty and exudes a relaxed modern ambiance that relies largely on the use of a neutral color scheme and wonderful natural ventilation. While the framing of the entire house was completed in no more than two weeks the off-site development was complemented by parallel foundation work on the lot ensuring that the building time was kept down to an absolute minimum.
The color scheme inside the house is kept largely neutral with white being the hue of choice and black window frames defining and anchoring individual spaces ever so effectively. Dark wooden floors and a brick wall just outside add to the textural beauty of the Armadale House 1 accomplishing a simple effective and functional transformation.
