Revamped refurbished and infused with modernity this extended Victorian home finds that ideal balance between past and future as its untouched traditional street façade hides a contemporary glass-draped rear extension crafted by Mitsouri Architects.
Designed by Gabriela Caicedo-Liebert the house combines a hint of Art Deco with unassuming minimalism and contemporary ergonomics to fashion a distinct and dashing silhouette. The two main structures of the house that welcome you are both windowless and have a gentle curved edge with the main entrance located in between the twin behemoths.
The lowest level contains a guest room along with a laundry room and a smart hall while the first floor holds the living room kitchen and dining space. The top two levels contain the master bedroom bathrooms and additional bedrooms and offer a great view of the city landscape and beyond.
A home that is surrounded by lush green vegetation and overlooking a meandering river does sound like an enticing prospect that none of us would shy away from. But building a home in the dense Bushland of Victoria as it sits on the edge of a small cliff and overlooks the Yarra River is no easy task at all.
The color scheme inside the house is kept largely neutral with white being the hue of choice and black window frames defining and anchoring individual spaces ever so effectively. One of the unique challenges of building this lovely family retreat was the existing building code that prevented the house from being any taller than six feet above grade on the building’s uphill side.
